USC Stevens Appoints Senior Marketing and Communications Manager
We are pleased to announce the appointment of John Merritt as Senior Manager, Innovation Marketing, Communications and Events at the USC Stevens Center for Innovation. Merritt joined the office on March 5, 2018, and will be responsible for the development, strategic planning, and execution of all USC Stevens marketing and communications initiatives in support of our mission to maximize the translation of USC research into products for public benefit through licenses, collaborations, the promotion of entrepreneurship and the advancement of USC’s reputation as a leader in innovation.
Merritt will develop and implement a plan to increase USC’s reputation for innovation externally, as well as to attract internal participants in technology transfer. He will supervise and work closely with the current Marketing Coordinator, Peijean Tsai, in USC Stevens’ strategic communication efforts and the development of marketing materials, planning and execution of USC Stevens events, and support for various USC Stevens programs.
Merritt has more than 15 years of communications and marketing experience with nonprofit and for-profit organizations, including the University of Minnesota, the University of Colorado, and consumer brands such as Maytag and Harley-Davidson. His strategic communications and marketing efforts have delivered exceptional results that have been recognized by a number of professional organizations, including two Silver Anvils from the Public Relations Society of America. As director of communications in the Office of the Vice President for Research at the University of Minnesota, Merritt developed and implemented a strategic communications plan that significantly increased awareness of university technology commercialization achievements. The overwhelming majority of earned media coverage was positive in tone and thoroughly transformed perceptions of the university’s technology commercialization efforts. Merritt’s previous experience includes nearly six years in a public relations agency, four years at a commodities manufacturer, and time at an e-commerce start-up. He also taught introductory European history as an adjunct faculty member. Merritt earned a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in European History and a Master of Arts in French Studies from New York University and Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees from the University of Minnesota.
