Fast Facts for Licensees and Investors

Interested in our IP?

Here’s a general outline of the process for licensing a technology through our office:

Contacting Us
You've identified USC technology and would like to learn more about aquiring a license. The first step is to contact the Innovation Advancement team member that is managing the IP you are interested in. This information is available at the bottom of the IP file you found on our website.

Sharing of Non-Confidential Information
Once you have contacted an Innovation Advancement team member, we can send you additional information about your requested technology or put you in touch with the inventor(s). If a paper was published, or a patent has been issued on the technology, we can send you detailed information

Signing of Non-Disclosure Agreement
If the technology has not yet been published and/or you would like to discuss the technology in detail with the inventors, we’ll put a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) in place. Where an exchange of material is necessary (as with many biological and chemical technologies) a Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) should be negotiated and signed. Contact us and we will send you the appropriate document(s) for review and signature. After the NDA is signed, we will send you additional information about the technology. The inventor(s) will provide you with the sample material.

Meeting with USC Innovators
We will facilitate meetings between you and the inventor(s). Typically meetings are scheduled to discuss technical aspects of the innovation and how they might fit with your company.

Licensing the Technology
If you are interested in licensing a technology from USC, an Innovation Advancement and Business Development Associate will discuss the different types of licenses available. If you will also be sponsoring research at USC, and Innovation Advancement officer will make sure you have the right contacts.

Are USC inventions ready for the market?
As a university, USC's expertise is in teaching and research. Some of the technologies and inventions we have available for licensing are ready for commercial use today but in general, these inventions are still early stage. We are always looking to work closely with investors and entrepreneurs to put together a commercialization strategy or start-up team.
