David Mellman, Ph.D., J.D., is a Licensing Associate at the USC Stevens Center for Innovation, and brings both legal and technology transfer experience to his role.

Prior to joining USC Stevens, Mellman worked in Colorado at a boutique law firm performing patent prosecution. Mellman also worked at the Technology Transfer Office at the University of Colorado where he worked with the college’s faculty to secure patent rights, draft agreements, and market and commercialize university-generated intellectual property.

Mellman has a Bachelor of Science in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology, and a Master of Science in Plant Molecular Biology from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He earned a Ph.D. in Pharmacology at the University of Wisconsin at Madison where he was an American Heart Association research fellow.

After earning his doctorate, Mellman received his J.D. from Marquette University Law School, where he graduated on the Dean’s List and was awarded the CALI Award for Future Excellence in Patent Law, an honor given to the highest scoring student in each class at law schools nationwide. He then earned an LL.M. in Intellectual Property Law from the University of Colorado School of Law.

Mellman is an active member of the Association of University Technology Managers, a licensed attorney, and a member of the bar at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
