The USC Stevens Institute is a university-wide resource in the office of the Provost whose mission is to help the USC community make maximum impact with their ideas. The institute identifies and supports USC faculty and students, to better help launch their ideas into products, services, and organizations that serve societal and business needs. As part of this role, the institute manages the university’s intellectual property portfolio stemming from its $560M in research expenditures annually. Since its launch five years ago, the USC Stevens Institute has been creating dynamic interface between USC research and the community of entrepreneurs, investors, and corporate partners and has been nurturing a robust local innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem for students and faculty.

USC Stevens has also begun to create an impressive range of innovation programs that have touched students and faculty in USC’s College and 17 professional schools. Programs include the annual First Look LA investor event in collaboration with Caltech and UCLA; the annual USC Student Innovator Showcase and Competition; the Social Innovation Fast Pitch program; and a mentoring program for new ventures. Newly launched programs include the Ideas Empowered grant and mentoring program and a groundbreaking new Innovation Diploma program for PhD students. These programs, which are supported by a highly effective communications team, have helped advance an already strong culture of innovation and entrepreneurship on campus.

The USC Stevens Institute for Innovation, a university-wide resource in the office of the Provost at the University of Southern California, is seeking a Program Administrator to play a key role in providing support to the Directors of the new USC-Coulter Translational Research Partnership Program and the Ideas Empowered Program.

The new USC-Coulter Translational Research Partnership Program will fund cutting-edge biomedical technologies with the purpose of improving clinical practice and will train innovators in translational research and commercialization. The USC-Coulter Translational Research Partnership Program is a collaboration between the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, the Keck School of Medicine of USC, the USC Stevens Institute for Innovation, the Southern California Clinical Translational Science Institute (SC-CTSI), and the Coulter Foundation, and is co-directed by the USC Stevens Director of Innovation Development and the Innovations Project Manager for the Center for Scientific Translation at SC-CTSI.

The Ideas Empowered Program seeks to support groundbreaking projects emerging from USC research, which could “spin out” of the university within a year or two and have great impact. In addition to expert mentorship and support, participants in the program may receive grants for validation of technical feasibility through proof-of-concept experiments and prototype development. This program is managed by the Director of Innovation Development at the USC Stevens Institute for Innovation.

Job responsibilities:

  • Reports to the Directors of the Ideas Empowered Program and the new USC-Coulter Translational Research Partnership Program. Responsibilities include administrative duties associated with translational programming including but not limited to preparing, marketing, and distributing grant solicitations, processing grant proposals, organizing proposal review and selection process, organizing grantee workshops, and overseeing grant administration process. Serves as a point of contact for the two Directors
  • Participates in meetings, prepares meeting minutes and presentations, tracks status of projects, and compiles reports and summary documents.
  • Collects, organizes, and catalogues professional materials for the Directors and maintains a shared online folder for the team’s use.
  • Participates in outreach efforts and recruiting of potential mentors for the programs. Provides recommendations for possible mentor matching.
  • Develops and maintains detailed program schedules.
  • Collaborate with Director of Communications to arrange logistics for program events, promote success stories, and prepare annual program reports.

Requirements:

  • 3-5 years of project management experience.
  • Must possess professional demeanor and excellent interpersonal communication, organizational, verbal, and writing skills.
  • Must be able to work well in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, and academic environment.
  • Must be detail-oriented.
  • Proficient with the Internet and Microsoft Office (particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Bachelor’s Degree

Senior Technology Advancement & Licensing Manager Life Sciences (Biomedical Devices and Technologies)

In this position you will play an important role in developing a high impact portfolio of USC Life Science innovators, intellectual property, and licenses, and creating a marketplace between breakthrough ideas, business, and investment. Specifically, you

Assistant Director, Engineering/Physical Sciences in the Technology Advancement & Licensing team

The USC Stevens Institute for Innovation seeks outstanding candidates for the position of Assistant Director, Engineering/Physical Sciences in the Technology Advancement & Licensing team. As lead for the Engineering and Physical Sciences team, you will play a critical leadership role in the pursuit of ambitious goals to significantly increase the level of high impact technology licensing activities at USC. About the Institute:

The USC Stevens Institute is a university-wide resource in the office of the Provost whose mission is to help USC innovators make maximum impact with their ideas. As part of this role, the USC Stevens Institute promotes the commercial translation of university inventions stemming from USC’s $560 million in annual research expenditures.

Engineering and Physical Sciences research continues to grow at USC. This growth is fueled by the strength of the researchers at the Viterbi School of Engineering (ranked #10 globally in the Shanghai Jiao Tong rankings) and the Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts & Sciences (recently named based on a $200 million naming gift). Groundbreaking research is being conducted in dozens of research institutes and centers, including the Loker Hydrocarbon Research Institute, the Information Sciences Institute, a DOE Energy Frontier Research Center, the Center for Quantum Information Science and Technology, the Center for Interactive Smart Oil Field Technology, and several other national centers of research excellence, as well as the USC Energy Institute which is focused on making USC a leader in cross-disciplinary research to develop sustainable energy solutions. USC’s new President has launched an important initiative to bring additional world class, transformational scientists to USC. The growth in engineering and physical sciences discoveries and inventions will provide the underlying base for new products and companies in cleantech, computing, electronics, health care, security, construction, transportation, and many other industries.

The Technology Advancement & Licensing team manages patenting, technology advancement, marketing and licensing activity for university-developed innovations. The Technology Advancement & Licensing team also works closely with the USC Stevens Institute’s New Ventures team, which has developed and coordinates numerous resources on and off campus to assist with the development of startup companies and enhance the translation of university research generally. For example, the institute’s signature “Ideas Empowered” program and the recently announced Coulter translational research partnership are important tools for technology advancement efforts. These programs provide mentoring, programmatic support, and gap funding to ideas that are close to spinning out of USC.

Responsibilities:

In this position you will play a lead role in developing a high impact portfolio of USC Engineering and Physical Science innovators, intellectual property, and licenses, and creating a marketplace between breakthrough ideas, business, and investment. Specifically, you will:

  • Lead the Engineering/Physical Sciences Technology Advancement & Licensing team. Help set strategic direction for the team and coordinate team activities. Serve as team spokesperson and coordinate outreach efforts both inside and outside university.
  • Develop and engage a community of companies, investors, entrepreneurs, and other industry experts and connect USC researchers with that community. Help build USC’s brand in innovation.
  • Work closely with USC researchers to identify high impact inventions, create strong intellectual property, identify research path for advancing the technology towards commercial application, and identify potential commercial applications and business partners. Coach and mentor USC researchers on the technology commercialization process, intellectual property, and related issues.
  • Manage a portfolio of university inventions, including overseeing patent investment and strategy, opportunity analysis, marketing, licensing, and alliance management. Negotiate win-win business agreements with licensees and other collaborators.
  • Work with the New Ventures team to identify and support startup opportunities based on Engineering and Physical Sciences innovations
  • Provide excellent customer service to USC researchers and collaborators.

  • Provide oversight to junior staff and student interns. Develop training objectives and career path guidance for junior staff.
