Academic Programs

Engineers and science students may be particularly interested in the undergraduate minor and a graduate certificate in engineering technology commercialization. Business, engineering, and science students may also want to explore a graduate certificate in technology commercialization.

Here is a list of some curriculum workshops available at USC. If you have a course or workshop you would like to include in this list, please contact us.

Graduate Certificates

Graduate Certificate in Technology Commercialization

The Certificate in Technology Commercialization is offered through the GreifCenter for Entrepreneurial Studies in the Marshall School of Business at USC.

The certificate program provides students with a variety of opportunities to learn commercialization skills in an academic/real world environment that combines theory and practice. Students participate in our living laboratory academic program to experience the entire spectrum of the commercialization process: invention, product development, technical and market feasibility analysis, intellectual property acquisition, business planning, and venture funding while potentially becoming stakeholders in a new technology venture. They are also eligible to apply for summer internships sponsored by industry partners to give them additional experience in taking a new technology to market.

The program is particularly suited to those in science, engineering, and business. Students include masters and Ph.D.-level researchers in medicine, the sciences, and all areas of engineering as well as MBA candidates.

The completed certificate is awarded by USC and is documented on the graduate’s transcript.

Graduate Certificate in Engineering Technology Commercialization

The graduate certificate in engineering technology commercialization provides USC engineers with the knowledge, skill set and confidence to manage intellectual property and technology innovation and enables them to connect with colleagues in industry and venture capital to address real-world problems through technology transfer and commercialization. This certificate program provides an opportunity for graduate students to understand the process of evaluating the feasibility of their ideas and inventions and the confidence to commercialize their ideas. It also provides an opportunity for practicing engineers to obtain an academically rigorous foundation of technology commercialization which drives their company. The program is interdisciplinary in nature, requiring courses from both the business and engineering schools and providing education in the economic, technological and management aspects of commercializing new engineering ideas.

Applicants to this program are expected to have a degree in engineering or science from an accredited institution. USC students are expected to have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, a score of at least 650 for the quantitative portion and 400 on the verbal portion of the GRE test.

To apply for the engineering technology commercialization certificate, please email Carolyn Suckow for more information.

Undergraduate Minors

Undergraduate Minor in Engineering Technology Commercialization

The undergraduate minor in engineering technology commercialization is interdisciplinary in nature, requiring courses from both the business and engineering schools and providing education in the economic, technological and management aspects of commercializing new engineering ideas. Business courses include those in technology entrepreneurship, case studies in new ventures and an elective in business plans. Engineering courses cover engineering economy and engineering law. There is also a dean’s seminar jointly taught by the business and engineering schools. Elective courses in technologically specific areas of commercialization, such as biomedical devices, are also included. This USC Stevens program is especially suited to engineering majors.

*To apply for the minor, interested students should meet with an advisor in RTH 110

Minor in Biotechnology

The LAS departments of Biological Sciences and Chemistry and the Marshall School of Business Administration are jointly offering the cross-departmental minor in Biotechnology. This minor brings essential knowledge in the basic sciences together with the corporate skills needed in a rapidly growing industry. The minor is especially well suited for the Business, Biological Sciences, Chemistry or Engineering student seeking a career in business and/or the biomedical/bio-technical sciences.

Minor in Video Game Design and Management - Got game?

If all the world’s a stage, then video gaming is its most action-packed, cutting-edge arena. Acquire the tools you’ll need to express your creativity through interactive entertainment – as a game designer, game producer or quality assurance specialist. Through this interdisciplinary academic program between the Information Technology Program (ITP) and the School of Cinema/TV, you’ll be taught the basics of successful video game development, including the underlying principles behind game design and the framework for producing or project managing games. By the completion of the minor, you’ll be able to build your own game treatment and showcase it to an industry audience.

"Our younger citizens must be prepared for a lifelong process of learning and unlearning. We must not merely train them in conventional skills--we must equip them to develop for themselves the sets of skills that would be appropriate for unexpected professional and technological developments. "
