Manage Intellectual Property
A huge part of the work we do each day at the USC Stevens Institute involves the management of the intellectual property (IP) at USC. That means, our office is responsible for evaluating new ideas, patenting selected new inventions, marketing them to potential investors and licensees, and negotiating licensee agreements. The USC Stevens Institute oversees IP terms in industrial sponsored research agreements that bring in over $10M every year. This is becoming more and more important, and more complex, as universities and industry continue to develop close working relationships.
Create Start-ups We also support and focus on start-up creation. We provide coaching, networking, and showcaseopportunities to innovators that are looking to start a company. For example, the premier First Look LA event was hosted at USC, in partnership with Caltech and UCLA in Fall 2007. Sixty-five high level VCs participated in an invitation-only sneak peek at some of the most promising research and emerging startup opportunities from the three universities, elevating LA as a hub for high tech new ventures. Now and annual event, First Look LA was hosted at UCLA in 2008 and the event will take place at Caltech in November 2009. Here is a list of successful USC startups and USC Spinouts. If you have an idea for a startup please contact the USC Stevens Institute.
Connect with Funding The USC Stevens Institute helps USC innovators find the appropriate funding to help your ideas make impact. Need help with a call for proposals that asks about intellectual property, commercialization, or licensing? Contact us! We are excited to be planning an Innovation Fund for our faculty and researchers, starting with the health sciences campus. Faculty and researchers will be able to apply for resources (such as grants and mentoring) to take an idea generated and develop a proof of concept so they have a greater chance of getting further investment and turning into real impact.
Develop Skills for Lifelong Innovation
The USC Stevens Institute believes one of the greatest idea transfers we can make as a university occurs every May, when we graduate thousands of students.Chris DeWolfe of MySpace and Andrew Viterbi of Qualcomm are two of the many examples of USC students that made their impact after they graduated. Check out other alumni innovators in our Innovator Hall of Fame.
In addition to helping the USC community make impact with their ideas, the USC Stevens Isntitute is here to help develop lifelong innovators. Click here to check out the programs we have in place to help develop the skills for a lifetime of innovation among the USC community.
Promote a Culture of Innovation
USC has already had a long history of entrepreneurship and technology transfer. To further our success, we here at the USC Stevens Institute work to nurture a culture of innovation that will generate ideas and support from every corner of the university. The USC Stevens Institute for Innovation was made possible by noted venture capitalist Mark Stevens along with his wife, Mary, who contributed $22 million to create the institute at USC.
Celebrate Successes
The USC Stevens Institute works to celebrate our past and current successes every step of the way. We work with innovators to promote their news to the USC community, network them with appropriate specialists, industry leaders and other USC innovators and also organize events such as the annual Student Innovator Showcase to illustrate the amazing ideas that come from USC innovator's minds.
"The innovation point is the pivotal moment when talented and motivated people seek the opportunity to act on their ideas and dreams."
