Since the launch of the USC Stevens Institute for Innovation in March of 2007 amazing strides have been made through effectively transferring ideas, creating life long innovators at USC, and establishing USC as a thought leader in innovation.

The “By the Numbers” information below illustrates several of the Institute’s and Innovation at USC benchmark successes.

 

EFFECTIVELY TRANSFERRING IDEAS
  • In less than two years since the beginning of 2008, 15 USC spin-off companies have raised approximately $115M in financing.
  • Since and including fiscal year 2007, we have received, processed, assisted, and managed:
    - 549 unique invention disclosures
    - 375 material transfer agreements
    - 63 unique licenses exclusive and non-exclusive and 293 other agreements
CREATING LIFELONG INNOVATORS
The ultimate measure of our success in creating lifelong innovators will occur a decade from now as alumni create startups, develop groundbreaking products and services, and innovate new approaches to critical social issues.
  • 300 students from all 17 Schools and the USC College have participated in the annual USC Student Innovator Showcases
    - 2007 winner thatgamecompany, went on to great success in a three-game deal with Sony;
    - 2008 winner Project:Possibility went on to be featured in the NY Times;
    - More that 120 projects have been showcase and over 3,000 people have attended the event.
  • 8 USC innovation teams have been mentored in preparation for First Look LA.
    - Each event typically attracts about 80 high profile VC investors from across the nation
  • More than 350 people from the business, government, academic and nonprofit worlds participated in the Social Innovation Fast Pitch, including 35 coaches, 6 sponsors, 37 non-profits, and 4 top-tier media.
  • Innovation Inside” curriculum grants helped 53 students in a variety of schools ranging from Architecture, Engineering, History, to Fine Arts
  • We designed a Certificate Program and a Minor in Technology Commercialization, and created three new courses; “IP for inventors” was very successful.
  • With UpStart, we partnered with a $38B retailer to create a pilot, worked with 20 promising students, and helped test several ideas.
  • 8 USC students gained the opportunity to help with the success of five innovative local start-ups through our “Innovatorships” program. Upon completion of the program, 2 students were offered full time jobs at the startups.
  • We have very actively helped 8 student start-ups and 4 non-profits, which are beyond the traditional purview of tech-transfer.
  • At least 1,895 profiles have been created and 85 projects have been posted to MatchYard, our online teambuilding tool.
  • 11 student leaders from all disciplines at USC sit on the USC Innovation Leadership Council
  • The USC Innovation Driven Entrepreneurial Association (USC IDEAs) has hosted 3 innovation speaker series events, drawing more than 250 students from across campus

 

USC LEADERSHIP IN INNOVATION
TEDx USC
USC Partnered with TED to host the first-ever independently organized TED event at a university, selling out the venue at the USC Bovard Auditorium.
  • Qi Zhang and Jane Poynter's talks on TED.com have been seen by more than 560,000 people worldwide. That's 5 Coliseum's full!
  • More than 200 TEDx events in 60 countries have taken place since the inaugral event at TEDx USC
  • 2500 tweets, making TEDx USC the #1 trend on Twitter during the event
  • 1150+ registered guests, 8 speakers, 4 TED 2009 talks, 4 musical performers, including surprise guest Melissa Etheridge, 4 films from USC students, including first student film ever produced by alum George Lucas
  • 8 student bloggers for CNN.com
  • 7 interactive demos at the reception

RESEARCH

  • Submitted IMPACT whitepaper as requested by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, engaged other thought leaders in the process, gained traction on the idea so far, and received recognition as leading the effort
  • Published, distributed and presented a white paper detailing the findings of a national survey exploring the issues affecting university–venture capital relations.
