Our Approach

"Research universities in the 21st century not only will be judged by the quality of their research and the quality of their students, but also by how successful they are in transferring innovation into the marketplace in order to meet societal needs." - C. L. Max Nikias, Provost University of Southern California

USC is in a unique position to redesign the process of innovation in a university due to USC Stevens' integrated structure across all of these important functionalities, as well as the enterprising nature of the USC community and the involvement of top-notch schools in a broad range of disciplines.

A Unique Approach

USC Stevens approach to innovation is unique in the three key ways:
  • FOCUS ON INNOVATOR, AS WELL AS INNOVATION: USC Stevens focuses on transferring both the innovations that are discovered at USC into society, as well as cultivating our researchers and students as the future innovators who will have a lasting impact on our future world.

We provide connections to business leaders who can help mentor and coach these future innovators, recognizing that USC researchers and students will carry their innovation toolkit with them throughout their lives.

  • UNIVERSITY-WIDE: This is the first time a major research university has created a university-wide, centralized hub out of the Office of the Provost to consolidate innovation transfer operations, educational and co-curricular programming, and innovator development.
  • CROSS-FUNCTIONAL TEAMS: To ensure each innovation receives the appropriate support, USC Stevens will build cross-functional teams in thematic areas of interest, such as arts and media and the life sciences, and programs developed in each will be based on the unique needs within each of these areas.
Our Programs

USC Stevens currently offers the following:

  • Intellectual property development and licensing, patent processing, and IP protection for any and all USC-owned IP
  • Central connection for industry seeking cutting-edge innovations in which to invest
  • Promotion of educational programs, courses, student groups, and resources in innovation
  • Development of new interdisciplinary partnerships to advance innovation across campus

  • Community-building events to connect the innovators and investors

In the coming months, USC Stevens will offer faculty and students connections to industry experts for mentoring in commercialization and start-up strategy and fund-raising.

“We envision USC as a powerful engine for making a better world in the 21st century. To realize this vision, we must have faculty and students who are capable of engaging in research of the highest caliber and of connecting with colleagues in industry and venture capital to address real-world problems.”
